„New Ballet for Xala“ is a composition from Don Li for xala, string quartet and surround-electronics. The worldwide unique instrument xala (floor-xylophone) is played and danced on by Ania Losinger. With flamenco shoos and staves she makes the complex grooves of Tonus-Music sounding on this archaic instrument. Tonus-Music is the musical and compositional concept of reduction and repetition developed by Don Li. The composition contains seven parts combined to a one hour during suite.
The smooth string sounds of the Tonus String Quartet complete the archaic and percussive sounds of the Xala and represent a polarity of the wood instruments.
