Katryn Hasler - Violine

südwärts

Composition for violin, sine oscillator, loop player and pattern based amplification in collaboration with Katryn Hasler (violin).

The violin is used to produce an organic sound spectrum. In the distance you hear a very simple electronic sound; the sine wave. Both sound sources are controlled by a switch that allows the sound to pass or not. This pattern based switch is used to amplify and produce rhythm out of continuous-like sound material. The piece is developing subtle, however strong layers out of minimal violin and sine wave sound.

A piece questioning the relationship of human controlled sound with mechanical rhythmic precision. A tightrope walk between sound and groove; between sense and precision.

nordhoch

Concertante installation for violin, mechanized zither and electronics in collaboration with Katryn Hasler (violin)

Perception of time begins to shift and alter and it is in a standstill like a stone in nature. Like the process of making a sculpture the music begins to chisel away and shapes the material; leaving only a delicate sculpture to remain. Movement begings there, which never ends.

Nordhoch is a composition reflecting not only different time perception but also convention of traditional performance. The violinist is a virtually motionless 'object' while the mechanized, self-moving zither is the primary protagonist. Slowly the borders are broken between progression and stagnation, movement and stoppage and between man and machine.
